13th September 2016 –  Cemeteries in Alston and Penrith have received a prestigious award for being beautifully maintained and recognised as some of the very best in the country.

The cemeteries are among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that have received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The award is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

“We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the fifth successive year from Keep Britain Tidy. This Award recognises and highlights that people in Alston Moor are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality. Work in the cemetery includes the maintenance of the grassed areas, trees, footpaths and the excavation and maintenance of the graves. Identifying and encourage biodiversity and checking the area for health and safety concerns.”
